Gethsemene

£0.00

What is it?

Garden grove of
Olive branches
And lemon trees swaying on
Evening breeze.
Toasted air
And sun-warmed earth soft
Between the toes of new-washed feet

Gentle drift of fresh wind
Cut with bitter taint
Of minty hyssop
With after-taste of wine
And bread
Lingering drowsily on that sated
Band of faithful few.

A poem written for Maundy Thursday or Good Friday set in the Garden of Gethsemene. First performed at Adelaide Place Baptist Church in 2019.

What’s it about?

A poem describing Jesus’ arrest in the Garden of Gethsemene, examining the brutality of the event, and the power of a non-violent response.
